LEBEDEVS TARGETS SGP HISTORY

Latvian ace Andzejs Lebedevs is targeting FIM Speedway Grand Prix history as he bids to become his nation's SGP full-timer.

Latvian ace Andzejs Lebedevs is targeting FIM Speedway Grand Prix history as he bids to build on his sensational Monster Energy SWC and become his nation’s first SGP full-time star.

The 22-year-old was one of the riders of the tournament last week as he inspired Latvia to sixth spot overall – their joint best Monster Energy SWC finish, matching their third place in the 2013 Race Off in Prague.

Powering to 15 points at Event 2 in Vastervik and 18 in the Race Off at Leszno, Lebedevs was heroic for his country, and followed it up with a 13 paid 15-point maximum for Wroclaw in Poland on Sunday and 13 for Smederna in the Swedish Elitserien last night.

With form to rival the best riders in the world, some are tipping the Daugavpils-born star as an SGP star of the future.

It’s a dream new father Lebedevs would love to realise as he bids to inspire Latvia’s next generation on to the shale.

He said: “I need time. I’m moving up a little bit in my career. But I’ve had good results in the Ekstraliga, the European Championship and now the World Cup.

“What can I say? The Grand Prix is my dream and I’ll work hard for this. I think and I hope that in the future I can qualify for the Grand Prix.

“I want to write Latvian speedway history. Maybe other young guys will see this and want to ride speedway as well. There are many young boys who are training in Daugavpils. Speedway is a popular sport and more of them want to do it.”
