BARTEK: MEDAL RACE IS ON

Bartosz Zmarzlik insists the race is on for a medal in Melbourne after finishing third in the NICE Torun FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland.

Polish star Bartosz Zmarzlik insists the race is on for a medal in Melbourne after finishing third in the NICE Torun FIM Speedway Grand Prix of Poland on Saturday night.

The Gorzow man played his part in a great night for the home fans, which saw compatriot Patryk Dudek pick up his first SGP victory.

Zmarzlik has now reached five finals in six rounds, winning in Malilla, finishing second in Stockholm, third in Torun and fourth in Cardiff and Gorzow.

I want to say thanks to the Polish people. I saw lots of flags with my name and telling me ‘come on!’ Thank you very much because this is a gift for me.

Bartosz Zmarzlik

Last year’s bronze medallist has the chance to seal a second straight World Championship rostrum finish at the QBE Insurance Australian SGP in Melbourne on October 28.

Zmarzlik is sixth on 108 points – putting him seven behind third-placed Tai Woffinden, who has 115. Maciej Janowski is fourth on 113 and Emil Sayfutdinov fifth on 109.

Asked how he rated his chances of reaching the top three, Zmarzlik said: “There’s always a chance – this is speedway. It’s very close from third to sixth place. I’m one point from fifth and seven from third. That’s not so bad. Maciej and Emil are very close to the podium too. We’ll see what happens at the last GP.”

Zmarzlik is delighted with his recent final flourish, which leaves him just four points from guaranteeing his place in the 2018 World Championship.

“I am very happy because I have reached five finals this season,” he said. “That’s third position in Torun. That’s not so bad.

“Teterow was not such a good meeting for me – I scored two points. After that, my dream was just to stay in the top eight. Now I can think about next season. But we will see what happens at the last GP in Melbourne.”

Zmarzlik is keen to leave Melbourne with more happy memories later this month. He said: “I did well in Melbourne last year. I got a podium position. Winning a medal there was a special day for me last year – it was my first season and first medal in the GP. It was a beautiful day.”

After starring in Torun, Zmarzlik says his charge to the final was fuelled by fantastic support from the Polish fans.

He said: “I want to say thanks to the Polish people. I saw lots of flags with my name and telling me ‘come on!’ Thank you very much because this is a gift for me. It’s such a good job they do – I know that when I’m in the stadium, I’m not so alone. Together with the people, I got a good result in this meeting.”
