ANDERSEN QUESTIONS DANISH DESIRE

Hans Andersen questioned motivation levels in the Danish camp as they bid to bounce back from last summer’s early Monster Energy SWC exit.

Former SGP star Hans Andersen questioned the motivation levels in the Danish national camp as they bid to bounce back from last summer’s early Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup exit.

The Danes were sensationally dumped out of the tournament after skipper Niels-Kristian Iversen lost a run-off for third place with Latvian hero Andzejs Lebedevs at Event 2 in Vastervik last year.

This followed their elimination at the 2016 Race Off in Manchester, meaning team manager and national speedway icon Hans Nielsen is yet to reach a Final since taking over the side two years ago.

The SWC is a lot of things, not just the riders. The team spirit needs to be good and other things need to work well for that to progress into winning.

He will have a chance to change that in this summer’s Monster Energy FIM Speedway of Nation – a pairs championship featuring 15 sides, with the top three from two Race Offs joining hosts Poland at the two-day Final in Wroclaw on June 8 and 9.

While Andersen wasn’t part of the team in Vastervik, he isn’t convinced the atmosphere in the camp was right for SWC week.

He said: “The last two years haven’t been very good for Danish speedway. The World Cup last summer didn’t do us any favours and I don’t think it was down to the riders in particular.

“The SWC is a lot of things, not just the riders. The team spirit needs to be good and other things need to work well for that to progress into winning.

“The managers we have are probably good at what they do, but sometimes you need someone who can motivate riders as well. Looking at the SWC last year, they didn’t look very motivated.

“In other sports, they have coaches for certain things. Maybe we should have someone who goes to the meetings and tries to motivate the riders, rather than just filling in a programme.”

Of the current management team, he added: “Things are done differently than they were in the past. I’d rather not comment too much on the way they do it.

“They obviously do it to the best of their ability. But maybe the right ones aren’t doing it at the moment. Who knows? The only thing we know for sure is the results aren’t there.”

With just two places on offer for senior stars, Nielsen faces a huge selection headache to pick two Danes for the Monster Energy SON, which gets underway at Teterow on June 2.

Andersen knows making the side will be tough. He said: “If they need me and think I’m suitable for the team, I’ll ride. But we shall see.

“The new format is tough because there are so many riders. It’s even harder for them to pick a team now.”
