SGP star Craig Cook admits he faces a huge test to retain his British Championship as the race for Cardiff comes to Manchester tonight.

Cook and double world champion Tai Woffinden are already guaranteed places in the Adrian Flux British SGP at the Principality Stadium on July 21, but tonight’s British Final winner will join them as wild card – or the runner-up if Cook claims top spot.

The sense of national pride is always strong among the riders in the British Final. It’s not just another individual meeting; it’s 16 countrymen battling to call himself Britain’s best.

The likes of Robert Lambert, Dan Bewley, Chris Harris, Scott Nicholls, Danny King, Rory Schlein and brothers Steve and Richie Worrall will be among the frontrunners for the coveted place in Cardiff.

But Cook, who earned the spot last year, expects an epic battle for the right to be called British champion.

He said: “The sense of national pride is always strong among the riders in the British Final. It’s not just another individual meeting; it’s 16 countrymen battling to call himself Britain’s best.

“There’s no such thing as an easy race, especially this year. There’s no one individual there to make up the numbers. It’s a strong field and everyone competing in it has earned his place. I expect nothing less than a close match. Between four riders, there are 12 British titles and amongst the rest there is ample talent and potential. I’m really looking forward to this one!”

Harris is no stranger to the Principality Stadium, having claimed a famous win at the venue in 2007. But he’s determined to relax and enjoy one of the biggest nights on his calendar. He said: “Over the years I've put too much pressure on myself in wanting to win it. I'm just going to go there and enjoy it.

"I've won it three times, I'd love to win it a fourth, but I'm going to take every race as it comes and at the end of the night, we'll have a look at the points tally and see where we are."

BRITISH FINAL LINE-UP: 1 Richard Lawson, 2 Danny King, 3 Rory Schlein, 4 Dan Bewley, 5 Josh Auty, 6 Lewis Kerr, 7 Robert Lambert, 8 Kyle Howarth, 9 Ashley Morris, 10 Chris Harris, 11 Adam Ellis, 12 Scott Nicholls, 13 Craig Cook, 14 Richie Worrall, 15 Steve Worrall, 16 Jason Garrity.
