RIGHT RECIPE FOR COOK?

Great Britain star Craig Cook revealed a mechanical gamble transformed his Norrbil Swedish SGP as he bids to turn the corner in SGP 2018.

Great Britain star Craig Cook revealed a mechanical gamble transformed his Norrbil Swedish SGP as he bids to turn the corner in SGP 2018.

The Cumbrian, who heads to Cardiff for the Adrian Flux British SGP on July 21, started his night in Hallstavik with three last places and some will have feared a rough run of form was set to continue.

But Cook battled on in the pits, finishing third in his fourth outing and giving Russian rocket Artem Laguta a huge battle for second spot.

He then led race 17 ahead of GB team mate Tai Woffinden, working overtime to fend off the World Championship leader for three laps, before being forced to settle for second ahead of eventual finalist Bartosz Zmarzlik.

Cook hopes that race could mark a turning point in his season after finding a setup that put him firmly on the pace.

He said: “We went with something we haven’t done to the bike for a very long time and it just completely transformed it. It’s crazy that doing something we never felt would work would make such a difference.

“Maybe we have just been stuck in a rut and doing what we would normally do. Obviously that hasn’t been working, but it looks like we have found something.

“That’s not to say it will work in the future, but we feel like the bike actually started reacting and working a little bit.

“Obviously it would have been nice to win the race with Woffy. But the bike was just dragging me a little too far into the corners and I couldn’t turn it like I wanted to.

“I kind of knew what Woffy was going to do to me on that last lap. But that race is one positive to take from Saturday and I didn’t finish bottom, so that’s a plus point.”

Asked what he had changed on the bike, Cook was keeping quiet. He said: “I’m not saying anything. I’ll keep my cards close to my chest.

“I’m not saying what I have done will work for anyone else, but it seems to suit the way I ride and we’ll keep that as a base setting from now and put it into my future racing.

“I was right there with Woffy and he’s no slouch. So that was definitely a positive to take.”
